I love the State of Maine.
I have happy memories of living there in the late 1980s and early 90s with my then partner, Marvin Ellison. Marvin is still there (on the faculty of Bangor Theological Seminary), and with lots of other good folks he helped the State Legislature and the Governor to legalize marriage equality.
Alas, the opposition has forced a referendum this fall, and the money is pouring in to turn the law back to the old way. They are determined not to let this process of action by the people’s representatives and leaders stand.
Those who support marriage equality have a tremendous opportunity to push the tidal wave of justice forward by making sure that Maine voters defeat the negative forces. This is about more than Maine. This is an opportunity to show the nation that voters, when shown the truth, will do the right thing.
Lorri L. Jean, one of the longtime national organizers for LGBT equality, says, “Maine is now ‘ground zero’ in our great struggle for the American principles of liberty and justice for all.”
